Prospect Post Office, Heritage post office in Prospect, New South Wales, Australia.
Prospect Post Office is a brick building at 23 Tarlington Place featuring a hipped corrugated iron roof and a verandah supported by timber posts. The complex also includes outbuildings such as the former shop, residence spaces, and stables from the 19th century.
James Watts designed and built this postal facility between 1880 and 1890 as a service center for the growing community. The building operated from its start alongside a general store and became a key landmark as the settlement developed.
This structure is the last remaining building from the former Prospect Village and shows how people communicated in early Australian settlements. It stands as a reminder of a time when postal services and local commerce were closely connected.
The building sits on a quiet street and is easily visible from outside, though it is a protected heritage site. Visitors should note that access inside may not always be available and the property is managed by the City of Blacktown.
The building underwent major restoration work between 1997 and 1998 that carefully preserved its historical character while meeting modern needs. This restoration saved the structure from decay and kept it as an important surviving example from that period.
