St Bartholomew's Anglican Church and Cemetery, Prospect

St Bartholomew's is an Anglican church displaying Victorian Georgian design with a rectangular plan, square tower, and refined stone detailing throughout. The adjacent cemetery contains around 3,800 memorials with photographic records and represents burials spanning multiple generations of local families.

Construction started in 1838 under builder James Atkinson, with costs shared between local settlers and the Colonial Treasury following the Church Act of 1836. The building endured for generations until a fire in 1989 caused structural damage, which was later addressed through major restoration work.

The cemetery reflects the diverse religious beliefs of the community, serving members of different faiths who lived side by side in the region. Walking through the grounds, you notice how Anglicans, Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, and Orthodox families chose this place to remember their loved ones.

The site is located on Ponds Road and easily accessible for visitors who wish to explore the historic graves and architecture. Note that new burial plots are no longer available as the cemetery has reached capacity.

A fire in 1989 caused significant damage to the building, but thanks to community efforts and federal support, it was fully restored from 2000 to 2001. The restoration work demonstrates how deeply the community values this historical site.
