Nelson Bay

Nelson Bay sits on the southern shore of Port Stephens with a working harbor, boat slips, and a waterfront promenade that connects the community. Residential areas and shops surround this core, spreading toward the headland where visitors can reach the water and take in views across the bay.

The settlement began in the 1880s when a landowner donated ground for a church and school, establishing the core of community life. These gifts allowed the place to develop as a proper township with institutions that served local needs.

The place shows its maritime roots everywhere, from fishing boats moored at the harbor to locals who spend their days on the water. You can see how the community keeps these traditions alive through daily work and a shared respect for the sea that surrounds them.

Walking is the best way to explore, especially around the harbor and waterfront where most services cluster together. Bring comfortable shoes and sun protection, as the open water areas offer little shade.

A 19th-century lighthouse stands on the headland and once burned kerosene lamps before being updated with new technology. It now serves as part of the local sea rescue operations and remains a landmark visible from many parts of the bay.
