Chinatown, Gold Coast, Cultural precinct in Southport, Gold Coast, Australia.
Chinatown Gold Coast is a commercial district in Southport, spread along Davenport and Young Streets with connecting laneways running between them. The area is lined with restaurants, grocery stores, and small shops oriented toward Chinese and Asian goods and food.
The precinct grew from a community-led proposal in the 1990s and was officially recognized by local government in 2014. Its development was driven by Chinese community associations working alongside city authorities to establish a dedicated space in Southport.
The area is marked by three traditional Han Dynasty-style gateways at its entrances, creating a distinct sense of arrival. Lanterns and decorative elements follow Feng Shui principles, and visitors can observe how the space blends Chinese and Australian cultural references throughout.
The area is a short walk from the Southport light rail stop and is easy to reach on foot from the town center. Most shops and restaurants are open during the day and into the evening, making a daytime or early evening visit the most rewarding.
A roughly 13-foot (4-meter) statue of Confucius stands within the precinct, one of very few of its kind in Australia. Nearby, the Pandamonium sculpture merges a panda and a koala into a single figure, referencing both Chinese and Australian animals at once.
