Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, convention center in Brisbane, Australia
The Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre is a large modern building with glass facades and broad open spaces located in South Brisbane near the river. The structure spans about 450 meters (1,476 feet) with a distinctive roof design featuring five curved hyperbolic paraboloids, and contains flexible venues including the Great Hall for large gatherings, banquet halls accommodating up to 2,000 people, and numerous meeting rooms with high ceilings.
The centre opened in June 1995 on land that formerly held the South Brisbane Interstate Station, replacing part of the World Expo Park site, with construction costs of approximately 170 million Australian dollars funded mainly by the Queensland Government. A major 2012 expansion added five floors with two auditoriums seating 400 and 600 people, and it will serve as a key venue for the 2032 Summer Olympics.
The centre is located in South Bank, an area filled with parks, galleries, and performance venues. Visitors experience it as a gathering place where diverse groups meet for conferences, exhibitions, and community celebrations throughout the year.
The centre is close to hotels, restaurants, and public transportation including the South Brisbane railway line, making it easy to reach for visitors. Visitors should note that parts of the facility are currently closed for maintenance until mid-February 2026, with access through the Grey Street Foyer, and parking lots 2 and 3 have limited availability.
The building was named the world's best convention centre by the International Association of Congress Centres between 2016 and 2018, recognizing its high standards for cleanliness, staff service, and smooth event operations. A notable artwork called Pamphlet by artist Bruce Reynolds decorates the foyers and Grey Street, adding visual interest to the visitor experience.
