Makepeace Island, Private island in Noosa River, Queensland, Australia
Makepeace Island is a heart-shaped private island in the Noosa River with three two-bedroom villas and one four-bedroom Bali House. The accommodations sleep 22 guests total and include a tennis court, theater, swimming pool, and dining facilities on-site.
The island was named in 1924 after Hannah Makepeace, a housekeeper who received it from her employers Charles and Agnes Nicholson. Years later, it was transformed into an exclusive resort by Richard Branson and Brett Godfrey of Virgin.
Indonesian architectural elements shape the buildings and gardens throughout the property, with teak, granite, and stone materials imported directly from Indonesia. Visitors can notice these design influences across every part of the grounds.
The island is accessible only by boat, with professional staff managing all guest needs and orientation. Advance booking is recommended due to the limited capacity and exclusive nature of the property.
The island was originally known as Pig Island before its transformation into a resort destination. This agricultural past creates an interesting contrast with its current luxury status.

Heart-shaped geographic formations result from natural processes including erosion, coral growth, and tectonic activity. These features appear in various landscape types, from islands and atolls to lakes and coastlines. The distinctive shape typically becomes apparent only from aerial perspectives, making these locations popular destinations for scenic flights and aerial photography. Examples occur worldwide: the Heart Reef within Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Galešnjak Island in Croatia's Adriatic Sea, and Lake Toyoni on Japan's Hokkaido Island. Additional formations exist in the waters of French Polynesia and along North American coastlines. These sites combine geological interest with their symbolic shape, attracting visitors who seek both natural environments and the opportunity to witness these formations from above.
