Lake Moondarra, lake in Australia
Lake Moondarra is a large reservoir near Mount Isa in northern Queensland that stores water for the city and surrounding industries. The clear water is ringed by tree-lined shores with designated picnic areas, boat ramps, and ample parking for visitors.
The reservoir was constructed to secure water for Mount Isa and local industries, serving as a reliable water source for the community for many years. It continues to play a crucial role in the region's economic and daily infrastructure.
The lake's name comes from the local Indigenous language, connecting the area to its deeper roots. Today it serves as a gathering place where the community comes together for fishing, picnics, and seasonal events like the October fishing classic.
The site opens from 6 am to 10 pm with free entry, ample parking, picnic areas, and rental options for kayaks and boats. Pets are not permitted, and camping is only allowed during the October fishing event, so plan ahead if you want to participate.
The water has been stocked with barramundi, and no fishing permit is needed although catch limits apply. Visitors can also spot a surprising variety of birds like pelicans, cormorants, and colorful galahs inhabiting the waters and surrounding trees.
