Cloncurry Post Office

Cloncurry Post Office is a single-story timber building at 47 Scarr Street with a distinctive gable roof covered in corrugated iron and two matching porches. The simple design reflects the practical approach needed for the hot climate and remote location.

An earlier post office was built in 1883, but it was replaced by this new building constructed in 1906 by Queensland's government works department. The replacement came as the region's mining operations expanded and communication needs grew.

The building reflects how the community maintained its connection to Australia's vast outback during the mining boom. It shows how people in the region conducted business and stayed in touch with the wider world.

The building sits at the corner of Scarr and Sheaffe Streets in the town center and is easy to reach on foot. It still functions as an active post office serving the local community with everyday postal services.

The building follows the Timber T17 design, a standardized plan that Queensland's government specifically created for post offices built between 1906 and 1921. This template was an efficient solution for constructing post offices across remote areas.
