St John the Baptist Anglican Church, Richmond

St John the Baptist Anglican Church, Richmond, Heritage Anglican church in Richmond, Australia

St John the Baptist is a wooden church building with a gabled corrugated iron roof and silky oak interior finishes, built in the early 1900s. The structure sits on Crawford Street in Richmond's town center and follows traditional architectural designs common to Australian churches of that period.

The church was built in 1909 by Mr. Moore of Hughenden as Richmond grew during the sheep and cattle grazing boom. Before the permanent building was completed, worshippers gathered in a dance hall attached to a local hotel, supported by community donations.

The church's name reflects its dedication to a Christian saint and the spiritual focus of the local community. Inside, memorial boards and stained glass windows show the connection that local families had with this place over many decades.

Visiting is best done during daylight hours when the building is open and easy to access. Its location on Crawford Street makes it straightforward to find and explore as part of a walk through Richmond's town center.

The building was funded through donations gathered from residents who believed in creating a permanent place of worship together. This community support shows how central the church became to Richmond as both a spiritual and social gathering point.
