The Grand Hotel, Heritage hotel in Hughenden, Australia.
The Grand Hotel was a two-story timber building with traditional Queensland architectural features including large verandas on both floors. The structure at Stansfield Street was the largest timber hotel in northwestern Queensland when built.
William Henry Allan Munro designed the building in 1910 as a significant timber structure for the region. The establishment operated continuously until its closure in 2004 due to changing regulations and economic pressures.
It served as a central meeting place where local residents gathered for social occasions and during World War II housed military personnel. The rooms were woven into the town's social life for nearly a century.
The site is no longer accessible to enter, as the building was destroyed by fire in 2018 and only its foundations remain. Visitors can view the historical location from outside and learn about its architecture through preserved photographs and local records.
Mary Robinson, the original owner, successfully opened the hotel despite an earlier arson attempt. This beginning marked an unusual connection between the location and fire that would define much of its story.
