Mount Elliott Mining Complex

Mount Elliott Mining Complex is a copper mining site in Selwyn from the early 1900s with preserved smelting facilities, assay offices, and camp structures. The site shows the infrastructure used to process ore on location.

The copper ore deposits were discovered in 1906 and quickly led to the development of a major mining operation with rapid population growth in a short period. This early phase shaped the industrial development of the entire region.

The cemetery near the township shows headstones of miners and families from different backgrounds, reflecting the diversity of the early twentieth century mining community. Visitors can see how people from various countries lived and worked together in this place.

Visitors should expect uneven terrain and partly exposed foundation and masonry structures, so sturdy shoes are recommended. Orientation is possible, but the ruins are partly overgrown and sometimes difficult to identify.

The discoverer had a remarkable background as a gold prospector before finding the copper deposits. His mining activity marked an unexpected turning point in his earlier career.
