Einasleigh Copper Mine and Smelter is a mining and processing complex in Queensland with visible remains of the main shaft, crushing mill, and smelting facilities spread across the site. Concrete foundations, machinery bases, and industrial structures scattered near the Copperfield River show how early 20th-century operations were arranged.
Richard Daintree discovered copper deposits in 1867 and established Queensland's first base metal mine, which operated until 1922. In 1919 the Queensland Government took ownership and converted it into a state enterprise that supplied ore to the Chillagoe Smelters.
The mine shaped local life and led to the founding of Einasleigh township with hotels, stores, and meeting places during its working years. The site shows how people in this remote region came together and organized their daily activities around the mining operations.
