Rockhampton Botanic Gardens

Rockhampton Botanic Gardens, Heritage-listed botanical garden in Rockhampton, Australia

Rockhampton Botanic Gardens sprawl across 33 hectares between Murray and Yeppen-Yeppen lagoons, holding a mix of tropical plants, palms, cycads, and native Australian species throughout their sections. The grounds are crisscrossed with paths that connect different plant collections and open areas.

James Scott Edgar, trained at Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, began developing the first ten acres from 1873 and established the foundation of what would become the lower gardens visitors see today. His early work shaped how the collections and layout developed over the following decades.

The Japanese section features ornamental bridges and bonsai displays that visitors encounter as they walk through the grounds. This area represents a post-war gesture of friendship and shows how the gardens blend different design traditions together.

Entry is free and parking spaces exist for cars, buses, and bicycles, along with level paths throughout the main sections. Comfortable shoes and water are recommended, especially during warmer periods.

A canopy of Banyan figs around 150 years old creates dense shade across parts of the grounds. Running alongside this heritage is an avenue of Bunya pines that traces back to when the site functioned as a trial facility for testing new plant species.
