The Range Convent and High School

The Range Convent and High School is a Catholic school complex on Agnes Street featuring classrooms, residential quarters, and a chapel with imported stained glass windows. The site comprises multiple connected structures with teaching halls for different subjects and open spaces between buildings.

Sisters of Mercy founded this institution in 1873 as their sixth establishment in Queensland, introducing Catholic education for girls to the area. The relocation to Athelstane Range in 1895 accommodated the growing student population and expanded operations.

The chapel displays imported stained glass and religious artworks that reflect Catholic traditions and values. These visual elements shape how visitors experience the spiritual spaces throughout the complex.

The site features large verandahs and open areas designed for Queensland's tropical climate, allowing visits throughout the year. Wear comfortable shoes as multiple buildings are spread across different levels on the grounds.

The complex housed one of the earliest swimming pools at any educational institution in Rockhampton, completed in 1926. This facility was unusual for schools of that era and demonstrates forward-thinking design for student recreation.
