History of Rockhampton Base Hospital, Heritage hospital in The Range, Queensland, Australia
The Rockhampton Base Hospital complex includes a medical superintendent's residence from 1936 and the Therapies Block constructed in 1938 on Canning Street.
The hospital relocated to its current site in 1867 after the Port Curtis and Leichhardt District Hospital proved inadequate for the growing population of Rockhampton.
The Outpatients Department and Sister Kenny Clinic introduced innovative treatment methods for poliomyelitis, emphasizing mobility through massage instead of traditional immobilization techniques.
The facility expanded significantly after the 1923 Hospitals Act, leading to new construction projects including a maternity ward in 1928 and nurses' quarters in 1929.
The Rockhampton Base Hospital contained Queensland's only purpose-built Kenny Clinic, which operated specialized polio treatment services starting from 1938.
