Broadmount, Queensland, Former port town in Thompson Point, Queensland, Australia
Broadmount is a former port settlement on the northern bank of the Fitzroy River in Queensland. The location sits within a landscape shaped by notable geographic features such as Mount Kilner and West Arm Hill that define the riverbanks.
The Queensland Government began selling land from 1866 under the name Herbert, offering town lots for settlement development. Port closure in 1929 followed by a wharf fire in 1930 marked the end of its role as an active shipping center.
The name Broadmount originated from the mountain that Matthew Flinders identified during his HMS Investigator expedition on August 10, 1802.
A boat ramp and floating walkway on the Fitzroy River provide water access and are maintained by Livingstone Shire Council. These facilities remain the primary infrastructure available for those wishing to use the river.
Matthew Flinders named the geographical feature during his exploration voyage with HMS Investigator in August 1802. This origin connects the location to early European exploration of Australia's coast today.
