Commissioned on 9 February 1923, it served during World War II.
The vessel is representative of early 20th-century American naval engineering.
Decommissioned on 14 August 1942, after being irreparably damaged by grounding.
Survivors of the S-39 were rescued by the Australian ship HMAS Katoomba.
