East New Britain Province

East New Britain Province encompasses the northeastern section of New Britain island and the Duke of York Islands, covering 15,816 square kilometers of land area.

The provincial capital moved from Rabaul to Kokopo following the devastating 1994 eruption of Tavurvur volcano, which forced the evacuation of thousands of residents.

The Gazelle Peninsula contains sixteen distinct Austronesian languages, with Kuanua, spoken by the Tolai people, maintaining the largest presence in the region.

The provincial economy operates through dual systems, combining modern cash transactions with traditional subsistence farming, focusing on cocoa and copra production.

The Nakanai Mountain Range features extensive limestone cave networks and deep dolines formed through continuous geological erosion processes over millennia.
