Tetepare Island, Uninhabited tropical island in Western Province, Solomon Islands.
Tetepare Island is an uninhabited island in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands, featuring extensive lowland rainforest across both land and marine areas. The landscape includes coastal zones, wetland areas, and dense forest that spreads throughout the entire island.
The island had original inhabitants who spoke their own language and maintained specific traditions, but they left during the mid-1800s. After that, the land remained empty while being managed by descendants of the earlier population.
More than 3000 descendants maintain customary land ownership through the Tetepare Descendants Association, which manages conservation efforts since 2002.
Tetepare Eco Lodge offers accommodation in five traditional Melanesian houses with rainwater systems and solar power. Visitors should expect long travel times to reach the location and prepare for limited infrastructure typical of remote island settings.
The island holds an exceptional variety of wildlife including hundreds of bird species, reptiles, and amphibians all living in this protected environment. This biological richness makes it a vital refuge for species that have become rare elsewhere.
