Vangunu, Volcanic island in Western Province, Solomon Islands.
Vangunu is a volcanic island in the Solomon Islands featuring dense forests and mountains that rise to roughly 1,000 meters in height. The landscape is surrounded by the Marovo Lagoon and shaped by rugged terrain.
The island came under British control in 1893 when the Solomon Islands became a protectorate. Japanese forces occupied the territory during World War II starting in 1942.
The 2,212 inhabitants of Vangunu communicate in two regional languages: Vangunu in the south and Marovo in the northern sections of the island.
Getting there requires taking a boat from nearby islands since there is no airport. Basic accommodation is available, and visitors should expect limited services and facilities.
The southern region near Zaira is home to around 200 people who protect the local forests. This area harbors a rare rat species that was only recently identified by scientists.
