Bairoko Harbor, Port on New Georgia Island, Solomon Islands

The harbor gained strategic importance in 1943 when fighting erupted between American and Japanese forces during the Pacific campaign. Japanese military used the location as a supply route for a nearby airfield during that period.

A United States Navy escort carrier was named USS Bairoko CVE-115 to commemorate the actions here. The ship later saw service in other Pacific operations after its christening.
