Ontong Java Atoll, Coral atoll in Malaita Province, Solomon Islands
Ontong Java Atoll is a coral island group in Malaita Province made up of roughly 122 small islands scattered across a large sea area. Most of these islands are very small, with the total land area rising just a few meters above the water surface.
The atoll was discovered in 1643 by Dutch sailors and named after a region in Indonesia. A British sea captain later gave it a different name, but the original designation stuck over time.
The residents speak a Polynesian language and keep traditional ways of living that show in their daily activities and how they organize their communities. They have shaped life here around fishing, farming, and maintaining strong family bonds across the scattered islands.
Getting to the atoll requires planning since the surrounding reef has several difficult passages and ocean currents are strong. Visitors should know that its location on open water affects how easy it is to reach and weather conditions matter.
The atoll has an interesting land ownership system where different types of property follow different inheritance rules. Coconut palms and gardens are passed down according to different rules than residential properties, shaping how the community is organized.
