Makahiku Falls

Makahiku Falls, 185-foot waterfall in Haleakala National Park, Hawaii

Makahiku Falls is a waterfall in Haleakala National Park where water cascades tightly down a vertical rock face in a narrow stream. The descent follows the natural contours of the bedrock wall without separating from its surface.

This waterfall sits within Haleakala National Park, created to protect the volcanic landscapes and ecological features of eastern Maui. The Kipahulu district was added later as an extension to preserve this watershed area.

The water here holds meaning for the local community as part of the natural system that supports life in the Kipahulu district.

The route to the waterfall begins near mile marker 42 on Highway 31 and follows the Pipiwai Trail for about half a mile. Wear sturdy shoes as parts of the path are steep and can be muddy after rain.

The trail passes through thick bamboo groves that create an unexpected Asian forest environment within the Hawaiian landscape. This unusual setting developed because bamboo species were introduced and thrived in the humid mountain climate.
