Hōlua Campground

Hōlua Campground sits at about 2115 meters elevation in Haleakalā National Park with individual tent sites and a cabin set within volcanic terrain and native shrubland. The sites are scattered across the sparse, rocky landscape shaped by volcanic activity.

The site developed through millions of years of volcanic activity that created the Haleakalā crater and surrounding formations. Ko'olau Gap today reveals the geological impact of those ancient eruptions.

Native Hawaiian plant species thrive in the volcanic setting around the site. The endangered Nene bird, Hawaii's state bird, regularly roams the surrounding areas.

Visitors need permits from the visitor center and must prepare for nights when temperatures drop below 4 degrees Celsius. Bring water filtration systems since water sources are limited on-site.

This location ranks among the darkest places on Earth with minimal light pollution, making stargazing possible under extraordinary conditions. Visitors can observe star patterns and celestial objects impossible to see from more populated areas.
