Hosmer Grove Campground

Hosmer Grove Campground sits at 7,000 feet elevation in Haleakala National Park and offers six campsites with picnic tables and grills on a grassy area next to forest. The sites are basic and located near the forest edge in this highland setting.

Ralph Hosmer, the first Superintendent of Forestry for the Hawaiian Territory, established experimental plots here in 1909 to test different tree species at this elevation. The plantings were part of a larger effort to store water in dry regions.

The forest here consists of conifers and eucalyptus trees planted over 100 years ago to increase rainfall on the mountain above. The marked trail shows how early Hawaiian foresters tried to reshape the landscape through tree-planting efforts.

The campground sits high on the mountain, so the weather is cold and windy, especially at night and early morning. It helps to bring warm clothing and prepare for quickly changing conditions.

Campers with overnight stays can watch the sunrise from Haleakala summit the next morning without needing a separate reservation. This special privilege makes waking up early worthwhile.
