Kīpahulu Campground contains 21 camping sites distributed across five walk-in spots and fifteen drive-in locations, plus one group site overlooking the Pacific Ocean cliffs.
The establishment of Kīpahulu Campground within Haleakalā National Park marked the development of controlled access to East Maui's natural resources during the mid-twentieth century.
The National Park Service constructed Hale Hālāwai near the campground as a meeting place for public gatherings and Native Hawaiian cultural demonstrations.
Visitors must secure reservations through Recreation.gov up to 30 days before arrival, with a limit of three consecutive nights and six people per standard campsite.
The campground provides direct access to the Pīpīwai Trail, leading through a dense bamboo forest to Waimoku Falls and Makahiku Falls.
