Kaia Ranch Tropical Botanical Gardens

Kaia Ranch Tropical Botanical Gardens is a 27-acre garden in Hana, Maui, featuring plants from tropical and subtropical regions around the world. The privately operated space includes both native Hawaiian species and plants from other islands and continents.

Jo Loyce Kaia and her husband acquired the 27-acre property about 30 years ago to create a botanical garden focused on plant conservation. The project grew from their personal commitment to preserving uncommon and endangered species.

The garden displays plants that Polynesians brought to Hawaii alongside native species found on the islands. Visitors can observe how these plants shaped daily life and food traditions for island communities.

The garden is located on Ulaino Road in Hana and is accessible as a private property. Visitors should note its proximity to Kahanu Gardens, which is in the same area and can be visited together.

The garden mixes fruit-bearing trees with flowering plants, showing how tropical species can be both practical and beautiful. This combination reflects the diversity that was once common in Hawaiian gardens.
