Hāmoa Beach

Hāmoa Beach is a crescent-shaped cove on Maui's eastern coast with dark sand shores and steep cliffs rising directly from the water. Thick vegetation covers the surrounding slopes, creating a enclosed pocket beach that feels secluded from the road above.

The location was originally known as Mokae before being renamed in the 1930s when Hotel Hana Maui began developing the area for visitors. This change marked a shift from an obscure coastal spot to a recognized destination along the Hana route.

Local people use this beach regularly for swimming and surfing, activities that have deep roots in Hawaiian practice. The enclosed cove and surrounding cliffs create a sense of place that feels separate from busier tourist areas.

The beach has restrooms, showers, and picnic tables available for visitors, though parking is limited and there are no lifeguards on duty. It is wise to arrive early and watch water conditions, as the cove can become rough during strong ocean swells.

The dark sand here contains volcanic material that allows comfortable barefoot walking without sharp coral or rocks. This natural composition makes the beach particularly pleasant for spending extended time on the shore.
