Kyoto Gardens of Honolulu Memorial Park, Friedhof in den Vereinigten Staaten
Kyoto Gardens is a garden area within Honolulu Memorial Park that houses traditional Japanese structures including the Sanju Pagoda and a Kinkaku-ji-style building. This roughly two-acre site contains these structures that serve as columbariums for urns, along with a Mirror Lake Garden featuring water features, stones, and carefully chosen plantings.
The site was developed between 1964 and 1966 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. The Sanju Pagoda and Kinkaku-ji building were created as interpretations of Japanese originals and demonstrate the cultural connection between Hawaii and Japan during this period.
The name Kyoto Gardens reflects the connection between Honolulu and the Japanese city of Kyoto, marked by a bronze bell donated in 1966. Visitors can experience traditional Japanese garden design here, with carefully laid paths, water features with carp, and plantings that echo gardens from Japan's Muromachi period.
The grounds are easily accessible with paved paths for a quiet walk through the gardens. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore the details of the buildings and water features at a relaxed pace.
The Sanju Pagoda is the only concrete pagoda outside Japan, built using traditional forms but modern materials like steel and concrete. Its height of about 116 feet makes it an unusual monument that bridges Eastern tradition with Western construction techniques.
