Brown & Hawkins Store

Brown & Hawkins Store is a commercial building in Seward with large display windows, a centered front entrance featuring transom windows, and exterior stairs accessing the upper level. The structure displays typical early 1900s retail architecture with distinct separation between the ground floor sales area and the residential section above.

Founded in 1904, the business supplied workers of the Alaska Central Railroad and residents with essential goods during the territory's development period. It played a key role in supporting the economic growth of Seward as the railroad construction advanced through the region.

The upper floor, known as Brown & Hawkins Hall, functioned as a social gathering place where the community held events and celebrations. It reflects how the business served as more than a store, becoming a center for neighborhood connections and shared moments.

The building reopened in 2019 under new management and now operates as an art gallery while preserving its historic character and architectural details. Visitors can experience a working cultural space where the original features blend with contemporary use of the rooms.

The business once operated five warehouses in Seward and distributed supplies to remote mining districts along the Iditarod Trail. This extensive supply network made it a vital logistics hub connecting the coastal town to distant interior settlements during the gold rush era.
