Mount Marathon

Mount Marathon is a mountain above Seward in Alaska, rising roughly 900 meters above sea level with steep rocky slopes. The terrain is crossed by several trails that depart from different points in town and lead to various summit objectives.

The mountain became the site of an organized race starting in 1915, when local miners wagered on who could reach the summit within an hour. The event evolved into an annual gathering that has shaped the town ever since.

The Fourth of July race brings together competitors from different places for a shared test of endurance. This annual tradition has become part of how Seward defines itself and connects people through watching or participating in the event.

Trails begin at various locations throughout Seward and require different levels of experience to climb safely. It is wise to check weather conditions before attempting any route, since conditions on the mountain shift quickly.

The north face holds a tight passage called 'the Slot' where climbers must navigate through a creek channel. This squeeze requires using hands and arms to make passage, becoming a memorable moment for those attempting the race.
