Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge

The refuge extends over 11.1 million acres of wetlands and forests, containing 40,000 lakes centered around the convergence of Yukon, Porcupine, and Chandalar rivers.

The United States Congress established this conservation area in 1980 through the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act to protect wildlife and natural resources.

The Gwich'in and Koyukon Athabascan peoples maintain their traditional practices within the refuge, utilizing the land for hunting, fishing, and gathering activities.

Access to the refuge requires air transportation from Fairbanks to nearby villages, with charter services available for float trips and river expeditions.

The refuge experiences complete darkness during winter and 24 hours of daylight in summer, with temperature variations from 100 degrees to minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
