Todos los Santos, Desert oasis in La Paz, Mexico
Todos los Santos is a settlement situated on a mesa west of the Sierra de La Laguna, positioned between Cabo San Lucas and La Paz. The town features art galleries, craft shops, local restaurants, and accommodations clustered within walking distance of the historic district and coastal areas.
The settlement was founded in 1723 as a mission station and expanded into a major sugar cane production hub with eight mills during the 1800s. This agricultural focus shaped the town's development during that century.
The settlement centers on its mission church, a gathering place where locals and visitors come together for celebrations. November festivities bring the community together to observe traditional customs and social gatherings.
The settlement is easily explored on foot, with the historic district and beach areas close together. Visitors will find it helpful to ask locals for directions to smaller spots, as the surroundings remain largely rural.
Freshwater springs returned to the area in 1981, allowing local farmers to cultivate vegetables, chilies, avocados, papayas, and mangoes. This water source transformed the settlement from a declining sugar production zone into a flourishing agricultural area.
