Peirano Market

Peirano Market is a historic commercial building in downtown Ventura constructed of red brick with ornamental relief brickwork and a Spanish revival tile roof. The structure sits directly across from Mission San Buenaventura and now operates as a market and delicatessen with indoor and outdoor dining areas.

The building was established in the 1880s when Nicola Peirano opened his Italian grocery store, which became a cornerstone of local commerce for generations. The family operated the business continuously for more than a century, preserving the original fixtures and interior design throughout.

The store reflects how Italian immigrants shaped Ventura's commercial life. Nicola Peirano, who arrived from Genoa, built a specialized Italian grocery business that served the community for over a century.

The building is easy to locate across from Mission San Buenaventura and stands out with its distinctive red brick architecture. Visitors can choose between indoor seating or outdoor tables while browsing local products and Italian specialty items.

Archaeological digs in 1991 uncovered remains of the San Buenaventura Mission Lavanderia buried beneath the building's foundation. This discovery revealed that the current structure was built directly on top of where the mission once washed its linens.
