Santa Cruz Island Scorpion Ranch Campground

Santa Cruz Island Scorpion Ranch Campground sits in a sheltered valley near the eastern shore and provides roughly 30 individual camping spots plus one group area. The site offers basic facilities including water and restrooms, set within dry coastal terrain and native plant life.

The location functioned as a cattle ranch during the 1800s when European settlers established farming operations on the island. This earlier use left marks on the landscape that later became part of a protected area.

The land holds deep roots with the Chumash people who lived here for thousands of years and shaped the island. Visitors can explore the surroundings where this presence echoes through the passage of time.

Bring all camping gear with you and reserve spots well in advance since the island is only accessible by boat. Island Packers company provides the main boat service connecting the mainland to the island.

The island is home to the Santa Cruz Island fox, a small fox species found nowhere else in the world in its natural form. Hikers who explore early morning or early evening may catch sight of this rare animal going about its daily routine.
