Santa Monica Stairs

Santa Monica Stairs are two parallel staircases that connect Adelaide Drive to Santa Monica Canyon in this Los Angeles neighborhood. One staircase has 170 wooden steps while the other features 199 concrete steps, giving visitors a choice between two climbing routes.

The stairs were originally built to connect residents between Santa Monica Canyon and the higher Adelaide Drive elevation. They developed as a practical solution to the steep terrain in this residential area.

Local fitness enthusiasts gather at these steps daily, performing various exercises between climbs while following established workout patterns and routines.

The concrete staircase has metal handrails for safety, while the wooden stairs are wider and make it easier to pass other people during the climb. Both routes are accessible on foot and require only appropriate footwear.

The two staircase types show different ages, with the wooden section representing the original construction and the concrete stairs forming a later addition to the system. This contrast between materials reveals the building history of the place.
