Boring Test Tunnel, Railway test tunnel in Hawthorne, US
The Boring Test Tunnel is an underground experimental facility in Hawthorne that stretches for 1.14 miles (1.8 kilometers) with a diameter of roughly 12 feet (3.6 meters). The tube was designed for experiments with new transport technologies and vehicle testing.
The Boring Company began construction in 2017 and completed the project in December 2018 as the firm's first major infrastructure development. The completion marked the transition from planning to concrete experiments with underground transport systems.
Technicians and developers use this facility to test new methods of underground transport in real conditions and refine them through hands-on work. The focus is on finding practical solutions through direct testing and gradual adjustments to the systems.
Three stations connect different sections of the tunnel and allow vehicles to enter via an elevator system at speeds up to 40 miles per hour (64 kilometers per hour). The passages are wide enough for regular cars, which travel through the shaft on a special platform.
Special guide wheels along the walls allow standard Tesla vehicles to navigate through the passage without manual steering. This technology replaces conventional rail systems with a wall-guided solution that ensures precise movement in the narrow space.
