Colonel Griffith J. Griffith donated a large portion of his estate to the city of Los Angeles in the late 19th century as a gift. The municipality later expanded the grounds through additional land acquisitions in the surrounding hills.
The Autry Museum within the park holds 500,000 pieces of art and artifacts documenting the diverse experiences of people in the American West.
Gates open in the early morning and close late in the evening, with main access points distributed along several roads. On weekends, a shuttle bus runs to the observatory since parking there is limited.
