El Pueblo Ribera

El Pueblo Ribera is a residential complex with twelve duplex units situated along Gravilla Street and Playa del Sur that face the Pacific Ocean directly. Each unit contains a ground-level bedroom and an upper sleeping porch that maximize space and allow natural air to flow through the structure.

Austrian-American architect Rudolf Schindler designed this residential complex in 1923, introducing early modern architectural ideas to Southern California. The San Diego Historical Society recognized it as a historic site in 1977 for its architectural contributions to the region.

The residences display the minimalist style of the 1920s with open floor plans and expansive windows that were revolutionary for their time. Visitors can see in the building design how people were experimenting with new ways of living and connecting indoor and outdoor spaces.
