Childrens Pool Beach, Protected beach in La Jolla, United States
Children's Pool Beach is a protected swimming area in La Jolla with a curved concrete breakwater that creates a sheltered cove along California's Pacific coast. The structure separates calmer waters inside from stronger waves crashing on the seaward side.
The concrete breakwater was funded in 1931 by philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps to create a safe swimming space at this exposed stretch of coast. The project aimed to provide better conditions for young swimmers in the area.
The site transformed from a swimming destination into a refuge where harbor seals rest and raise their young, which visitors can watch from the seawall. This shift reflects how the community chose to prioritize marine life over recreational use.
Access is restricted from mid-December through mid-May to protect seals during their pupping season. Plan your visit outside these months to see the full beach, though views of the seals from nearby areas remain possible year-round.
The concrete breakwater creates contrasting water conditions, with calm sheltered waters inside and powerful waves breaking on the outside. This contrast makes the site interesting to observe how engineered structures interact with natural ocean forces.
