Irvine Valley College, California, United States
Irvine Valley College is a public community college in Irvine, California, set on a campus of over 60 acres (about 24 hectares). It offers two-year associate degrees, certificate programs, and transfer preparation courses for students who plan to move on to a four-year university.
The college opened in 1979 as a branch of nearby Saddleback College and became a fully independent institution in 1985 with its own name and administration. Its growth followed the rapid expansion of Irvine itself, which developed from a planned community into a major city.
The campus hosts events throughout the year where students gather to celebrate traditions from many different backgrounds. Walking through the grounds, visitors notice a mix of people from the surrounding communities of Orange County who use the college as a meeting point.
The campus is easy to reach by car or bus, with parking lots and bike racks available on site. Clear signs throughout the grounds make it straightforward to find buildings, open spaces, and services even on a first visit.
Misty May-Treanor, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in beach volleyball, coaches the college's volleyball teams and brings that level of experience directly to student athletes on campus. A separate program called Irvine Valley Promise allows eligible local students to attend for two years at no tuition cost.
