Cleve and Elizabeth Purington founded the settlement in the 1920s, developing 80 acres (32 hectares) through the Sleepy Hollow Water and Improvement Company into small parcels for weekend cabins and permanent residences.

Residents have maintained strong neighborhood bonds since the 1920s, gathering regularly at the community center that was built in the early 2000s to serve as a social hub for local activities.
