The settlement comprises approximately 130 homes with large lots spread across Carbon Canyon within the Chino Hills, an area marked by wooded slopes and rural character in San Bernardino County.
Cleve and Elizabeth Purington founded the settlement in the 1920s, developing 80 acres (32 hectares) through the Sleepy Hollow Water and Improvement Company into small parcels for weekend cabins and permanent residences.
Residents have maintained strong neighborhood bonds since the 1920s, gathering regularly at the community center that was built in the early 2000s to serve as a social hub for local activities.
The settlement sits about 40 miles (65 kilometers) east of Los Angeles along Chino Hills Parkway, accessed via Carbon Canyon Road that winds through forested terrain with limited public parking options available.
Carbon Creek flows through the property and once fed natural hot springs along its banks, while Canyon Market has operated for decades as a local gathering spot for residents and travelers passing through.
