Carbondale, Orange County, California, Historical mining site in Santiago Canyon, California.

Carbondale sits at the junction of Santiago Creek and Silverado Creek in Orange County and marks the location of the Santa Clara Coal Mine from 1878. The site contains scattered remains and ruins from the coal extraction era.

The Southern Pacific Railroad established a mining camp in 1881 with a post office, hotel, saloons, and stores. Operations ceased in 1884 after coal resources became depleted.

The site carries the designation of California State Historical Landmark No. 228 and Orange County Historical Site No. 1, recognizing its coal mining heritage. These designations reflect how the community valued the industrial development that once shaped this canyon.

The historical marker is located at 8002 Silverado Canyon Road near the entrance of Silverado Community Church. Finding the site is straightforward once you reach this reference point.

Within three years of establishment, all buildings were dismantled and removed after coal resources became completely exhausted. This rapid abandonment shows how dependent the settlement was on a single resource.
