Presidio County, County division in western Texas, United States
Presidio County encompasses 3,856 square miles of desert and mountainous terrain along the Rio Grande, bordering Mexico in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas.
The county formation occurred in 1850 from Bexar County, with Fort Leaton serving as the initial county seat before Marfa took this position in the 1880s.
The county seat of Marfa developed into an arts center, attracting creators and collectors while maintaining connections to ranching and border trade traditions.
The Presidio County Commissioners Court manages local governance, establishing tax rates and implementing emergency notification systems for the 6,131 residents recorded in 2020.
The Marfa Lights phenomenon, documented since the 1800s, appears as moving lights across Mitchell Flat, drawing researchers and visitors to study these unexplained occurrences.
