Heroica Ciudad de Cananea

Heroica Ciudad de Cananea is a mining city in northeastern Sonora situated at an elevation of about 1,620 meters (5,315 feet). It spans across mountainous terrain positioned near the United States border.

The city gained prominence in 1906 when copper miners began a strike that influenced labor movements throughout the country. This event made it a key place in the history of workers' rights in Mexico.

The city preserves memories of its mining heritage through museums and exhibits displaying tools and photographs from decades of copper extraction. Visitors can see how this work remains woven into local identity.

The city can be reached via Mexican Federal Highway 2, which connects directly to major transportation routes between Mexico and Arizona. Visitors should note that the mountainous terrain and elevation require good physical preparation.
