Brown Canyon Ranch

This property is a four-room ranch house built with traditional adobe and whitewashed walls, featuring wooden doors and window frames that show its age. It sits surrounded by desert plants and shrubs in the foothills of the Huachuca Mountains, with man-made ponds nearby.

The structure was built in 1907 by James and Tom Haverty and passed through several owners before the US Forest Service took over in 1998. This transfer to a federal agency ensured the site would be protected and preserved.

The name comes from the brown adobe walls that blend naturally with the desert surroundings. Mexican workers and Yaqui residents shaped daily life here and left their mark on how the ranch operated.

The site is open during daylight hours for visitors to walk around the house and explore nearby trails at no cost. Bring water and sun protection since the area is completely open with little shade.

The property includes man-made ponds that now function as a refuge for the endangered Chiricahua leopard frog. This rare species lives in very few water sources across the region and finds suitable breeding habitat here.
