Santa María de Jesús is a municipality situated on the slopes of Agua Volcano at an elevation of 6,791 feet (2,070 meters) in the Sacatepéquez Department of Guatemala, featuring volcanic soil and lush vegetation.
Founded around 1540 by families from Quetzaltenango, the municipality developed around a central plaza following typical Spanish colonial town patterns and became part of the judicial system in 1836 under the Livingston Codes.
The municipality celebrates its main festival on January 15 in honor of the Virgin Mary and preserves traditional Kaqchikel Maya culture through events like the deer dance, performed in the central plaza by residents wearing traditional dress.
