Lacan-Tun biosphere reserve

Lacan-Tun Biosphere Reserve is a lowland rainforest in eastern Chiapas that stretches along the Lacantun River. The reserve contains thousands of plant and animal species living in dense forest that extends toward the Guatemalan border.

The Mexican government established this reserve in 1992 to protect the Lacandon Jungle ecosystem. This decision was part of a broader effort to safeguard threatened forest areas across southern Mexico.

Indigenous communities live here and maintain traditional ways of life while participating in conservation work. They use the forest resources in ways that support both their families and the protection of the land.

Plan for regular rainfall and humid conditions that occur throughout the year when visiting. The drier months offer easier trail access and better visibility for observing wildlife.

The reserve is part of a cross-border conservation corridor connecting protected areas across Mesoamerica. This linked landscape allows wildlife to move between refuges and maintain genetic diversity across the region.
