Yaxchilan

Yaxchilan is a sprawling riverbank archaeological site in the Lacandon rainforest that consists of several temple complexes, platforms, and roofed passageways. The layout spans three main levels connected by steep staircases, following a natural bend in the Usumacinta.

The city flourished between 580 and 800 CE, when rulers Shield Jaguar III and Bird Jaguar IV expanded power over neighboring settlements. After 800, the site declined and was gradually abandoned as the jungle reclaimed the buildings.

Maya rulers recorded their dynastic stories on carved stone stelae and lintels that remain in situ today. The interior chambers of Temple 33 show detailed reliefs with scenes of ritual acts and royal ceremonies.

Visitors reach the site by boat from Frontera Corozal, which takes around 25 minutes upriver. Paths between the temples cross uneven ground and some steep steps, so sturdy footwear is advisable.

Building 33 carries an elaborately shaped roofcomb that rises above the central chamber. Inside, several doorways retain stone beams with finely carved depictions.
