La Paz Department, Administrative department in central El Salvador

La Paz Department encompasses 1,223 square kilometers of territory in El Salvador, featuring agricultural lands, coastal areas, and mountain regions with diverse landscapes.

The department gained its administrative status in 1852 after combining the Olocuitla district of Cuscatlan and the Zacatecoluca district of San Vicente.

The region maintains traditional dances like 'The Tiger and the Deer' from 1868, depicting interactions between hunters, animals, and community members.

The department contains three municipalities and 22 districts, with Zacatecoluca serving as the administrative capital for a population of 328,221 residents.

Ancient caves throughout La Paz Department contain rock inscriptions that document the presence of pre-11th century Maya-Quiché civilization near Lempa River.
